Plagiarism Detection Tools

MOSS

Special note to CTI Faculty and those other faculty who use similar assignments:

Those faculty who have assignments involving code files might find assistance in detecting violations from MOSS.

  • MOSS is a free service hosted by Stanford University. Faculty submit a set of software source code files turned in by students for a particular programming assignment and the MOSS server produces web pages listing pairs of programs with similar code.
  • MOSS also highlights individual passages in programs that appear the same, making it easy to quickly compare the files.
  • Finally, MOSS can automatically ignore matches on the parts of the assignments that one expects to be shared (e.g., software libraries or instructor-supplied code), thereby eliminating false positives that arise from legitimate sharing.
  • To obtain a Moss account, send a mail message to moss@moss.stanford.edu. The body of the message should appear exactly as follows:

    registeruser
    mail username@domain (your email address)
  • If you already have an account, the latest submission script can be downloaded here and additional information is available here: MOSS.

“Turn-It-In” Plagiarism Detection Service

Turn-It-In technology is available to DePaul faculty to verify originality of student work.
The technology is based on prior submissions to Turn-It-In as well as public sources against which a student's current submission is compared. After comparison, Turn-It-In gives the faculty member a report on the probability of plagiarism, though the final decision whether the work constitutes a violation of DePaul's Academic Integrity Policy is made by the DePaul course instructor.
Note that all papers submitted by DePaul are placed within a separate node on the Turn-It-In site, allowing DePaul full access to the Turn-It-In database but preventing other institutions from searching the DePaul papers.

  • To examine the University's approved plagiarism detection system, turnitin.com, visit Instructional Technology Development's Turn-It-In guide
  • CTI Faculty and those other faculty who use similar assignments should see information about MOSS, a plagiarism detection tool specifically designed for assignments involving computer code files (available through a link on this website).
  • If you uncover a violation and impose a sanction of ANY kind that changes the conditions of the course, you will need to report the violation through the “academic integrity violation” link under “for instructors” on Campus Connect. For more information, please see the link on this website.
