Library Research Advice For Students

  • Research takes time! You'll need to determine which databases to use, figuring out what terms to type in, printing out articles, finding books, locating the bound journals (and a photocopier!), and critically reading and analyzing the sources.
  • It is okay to ask for assistance at the Reference Desk in person, by phone, submitted online to the Ask-A-Librarian email reference service, or through Instant Messenger.
  • Check out books as early as possible, especially for "hot topics" such as genetic engineering, abortion, body image or violence in the media.
  • The Internet-at-large, such as Google or Wikipedia, is not the same as the "Web-based resources" or online databases provided by the library -- MLA Bibliography, ABI/Inform, and Lexis-Nexis.
  • If the assignment says to "use the Internet," clarify with the instructor if this means you can use library databases.
  • Articles contained in full-text databases are often identical to the contents of the article?s original print version.
  • Most Internet search engines do not link to articles found in our full-text databases; however Google Scholar may provide some examples of and links to scholarly resources that students can find in our subscription databases.
  • Do NOT pay for an article found online! Write down the author, title, date and journal title - it is probably available for free at the library (ask the reference librarian for assistance).
  • Print is Not Dead. Do NOT limit your research to full-text article databases. Excellent information can be found in reference books, print journals, microfilmed newspapers, etc. View the online library catalog!
  • Take advantage of InterLibrary Loan to obtain materials not owned by DePaul, allow approximately 3-10 working days for processing. Save time by visiting local IShare libraries to pick up books or make photocopies of articles (You can return the books to a DePaul library!).
  • If the assignment says to "use the Internet," clarify with the instructor if this means you can use library databases.
  • Come to the library prepared: bring a copy of the assignment, the usual supplies (paper, pen, pencil), and a flash drive to download citations or full-text articles.
