I am an adjunct instructor teaching one section of a multiple-section course. How can I learn about what the instructors for the other sections are doing?

In some colleges, instructors teaching various sections of the same course have found it really helpful to initiate informal “listservs,” which they can use to send inquiries about teaching challenges or strategies. If you’re interested in communicating more regularly with other faculty who teach the course, you might start by asking your department chair about whether there are already departmental venues for exchanging this information or, if not, if you might start up an informal listserve of faculty teaching the course that quarter.

The Write a Syllabus page has some examples of syllabi from other courses.

What do I do for incompletes?

The official policy from University Policies and Procedures (2007) states, “Undergraduate and graduate students have two quarters to complete an incomplete. At the end of the second quarter (excluding summer) following the term in which the incomplete grade was assigned, remaining incompletes will automatically convert to 'F' grades.”

A request for an Incomplete (IN) is generally initiated by the student in situations where they have already completed a substantial portion of the work for a course but are unable to complete one or more assignments. A recommended course of action is for the instructor to determine whether or not they will grant the IN. If the instructor agrees to grant the IN, he or she then negotiates a course of action with the student as to the work that remains to be completed, the timeline for completing it, and any further meetings they require.

Once the student successfully completes the work, the instructor must submit the Change of Grade through Campus Connection before the last day of the quarter in which it is due.

Who can cover class if I had to go out of town?

Ask your department if there are informal or formal policies around scheduled absences. Some departments keep a list of instructors willing to cover classes while others might recommend that you design learning activities that can be done in your absence and outside of class (e.g., online).
